The photograph \u201cSeparated by ICE<\/strong>\u201d, by American photographer Carol Guzy<\/strong> for the Miami Herald, has won the World Press Photo of the Year<\/strong>, the top prize of the 2026 edition of the most prestigious photojournalism competition in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August 2025, Luis was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/strong> (ICE) agents after an immigration court hearing held at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building in New York City. Luis, an Ecuadorian migrant who, according to his family, has no criminal record, was the family’s sole provider. Consequently, his wife, Cocha, and their three children (ages seven, thirteen, and fifteen) faced immediate financial hardship and profound emotional trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following an executive order in January 2025, ICE revoked protections for \u00absensitive locations,\u00bb authorizing arrests in schools, hospitals, and courthouses<\/strong>. What Carol Guzy has documented is not an isolated case, but a policy applied indiscriminately to people who, paradoxically, were complying with the very rules set by the Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This photograph was selected from a larger set by Guzy, titled \u201cICE Arrests at New York Court\u201d,<\/strong> which won an award in the North and Central American region’s Photojournalism category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carol Guzy, winner of the World Press Photo of the Year<\/strong> award, said: \u201cThis award highlights the enormous global significance of this story. We have witnessed the suffering of countless families, but also their dignity and strength, which transcend adversity and have been a humbling experience. The courage they have shown in opening their lives to our cameras has allowed us to tell their stories. And, without a doubt, this award belongs to them, not to me<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Press Photo Executive Director Joumana El Zein Khoury<\/strong> said: \u201cThis image shows the inconsolable grief of children losing their father in a place built to deliver justice. It is a stark and necessary testament to the family separation caused by US reform policies. In a democracy, the presence of the camera in that hallway serves as a testament to a policy that has turned courtrooms into scenes of shattered lives; it is a powerful example of why independent photojournalism is important<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The image shows a crowd of Palestinians trying to get flour onto a humanitarian aid truck that has just entered the Gaza Strip through the Zikim border crossing, during what the Israeli army called a \u201ctactical suspension\u201d of operations to allow the passage of humanitarian aid. In 2025, famine gripped Gaza amid what an independent investigation by the UN Human Rights Commission concluded was genocide. Israel denies this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photographer Victor J. Blue<\/strong> (United States) with \u201cThe Trials of the Achi Women<\/strong>\u201d, for The New York Times Magazine, featuring a portrait of Do\u00f1a Paulina Ixpat\u00e1 Alvarado, who in 1983 was detained and assaulted for 25 days, standing alongside other Achi women in front of a courthouse in Guatemala City, Guatemala, hours after three former members of the Civil Defense Patrols were sentenced to 40 years in prison for rape and crimes against humanity. This violence, sponsored by the army and the state during Guatemala\u2019s civil war, was part of a broader campaign of genocide that resulted in the death or disappearance of more than 200,000 people, 83% of whom were indigenous Maya. The court\u2019s decision represents a definitive rejection of impunity in times of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Press Photo exhibition in Barcelona<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Photo of the Year and the two finalists were selected by the global jury of World Press Photo 2026<\/strong> from all the regional winning photographs<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
