The exhibition Isabel Azkarate. She Is Her Camera can be visited at the Instituto Cervantes in New York (United States) until January 18, 2026, in collaboration with Kutxa Fundazioa and the Etxepare Institute.
The inauguration of this retrospective exhibition, featuring 56 images from the archive of the author considered the first female photojournalist in the Basque Country, was held on October 2, 2025, with the presence of the photographer, accompanied by Silvia Omedes, curator of the exhibition and director of the Fundación Photographic, which represents Azkrate. The opening ceremony included speeches by Julian Schnabel, renowned New York artist and filmmaker; Javier Valdivielso, director of the Instituto Cervantes in New York, which hosts the exhibition; and Concepción Aranguren, the Basque Country’s delegate to the United States and Canada.
The International Photography Center also pays tribute to its former student
During her stay in the Big Apple, the photographer was also invited to the prestigious International Center of Photography (ICP), where Isabel Azkarate studied in the early 1980s while living in New York City and working on her now recognizable visual style. On October 3, 2025, the author and Silvia Omedes presented the book Isabel Azkarate, published by Blume Editorial, as part of the ICP Photobook Fest, where this visual anthology of Azkarate’s work was also exhibited.
Internationalization of photographic archives
Following the recognition in her homeland with Isabel Azkarate‘s exhibitions in Donostia/San Sebastián (the great eponymous retrospective at the Kutxa Fundazioa‘s sala Artegunea and Arte y parte at the San Telmo Museum), we are very happy with this New York success, which represents a great step in the internationalization not only of this pioneer of Basque photojournalism, but also opens doors to all the archives represented by the FundaciónPhotographic .
