“Spain is at the top of the list of countries with the highest percentage of births to mothers over 40 in Europe, and also among the countries with the fewest births per year. The difficulties women face in balancing motherhood with their work and social lives explain this phenomenon.”
So says Claudia Toledo, a documentary photographer and winner of the 6th Joana Biarnés Scholarship. Thanks to this grant, she has developed an investigation into motherhood after 40, distancing it from a purely individual perspective to place it at the center of a complex network of structural factors. It is a body of work that examines how the desire to become a mother is constructed and how it is limited by economic, labor, cultural, and biological constraints.
Exhibition in Barcelona
The opening of the exhibition, produced and curated by the Photographic Social Vision Foundation, will take place on March 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Pati Llimona Civic Center (C. Regomir, 3. Barcelona), and the show will be open to the public until April 29.
- The opening hours for the Pati Llimona Civic Center are: Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; closed on Sundays, public holidays, and throughout August.

Claudia Toledo (Chile, 1993) is a documentary photographer specializing in photojournalism and contemporary photography. Her work focuses on social issues through documentary photography, social education for young people through photography, and architectural photography.
She studied Professional Photography at the ARCOS Professional Institute in Santiago, Chile, completed a postgraduate degree in Photojournalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and studied Contemporary Documentary at the Grisart International School of Photography.
She currently teaches introductory photography courses for young people at the Espai Català-Roca Civic Center, in addition to developing projects related to documentary photography, as well as interior and architectural photography. She is a member of Women Photograph, is represented by Stocksy United, and her portfolio can be found on Photo Vogue.
