The exhibition

Eroding Franco is a visual journalism project that explores the connection between the environmental legacy of Francoism and Spain’s current desertification crisis.

Desertification, intensified by the overexploitation of the land and the unsustainable management of natural resources, is closely linked in Spain to the economic model promoted during the dictatorship. The expansion of tourism, construction and industrial agriculture transformed the landscape and laid the foundations for a process that now threatens much of the country.

Through a dialogue between historical archives and contemporary photography, the project examines how decisions made in the past continue to shape the present. It offers a visual reflection on environmental degradation, the loss of collective memory and the need to rethink our relationship with the land.
