Motherhood after the age of 40 is not simply a matter of personal choice. It is the result of economic, professional, cultural and biological factors that determine when—and whether—that desire can become a reality.

This investigation explores that context through Spain’s reproductive crisis, the rise of assisted reproduction, the transformation of care work, and a critical reflection on the concept of desire within a landscape shaped by structural constraints.

The project brings together the testimonies of women who have experienced—or attempted to experience—motherhood after the age of 40. Their stories reveal how job insecurity, access to housing, relationship instability and the unequal distribution of care influence their decisions and experiences.

Through data, photography and personal testimonies, the project offers a critical perspective on a model that frames motherhood as an individual choice, when in fact it is profoundly shaped by social inequalities and biological limits.
