Photojournalists Santi Palacios and Ricard Garcia Vilanova, winners of a World Press Photo award in 2017 and 2020, respectively, , and the freelance photographer Oksana Parafeniuk*, online from Ukraine, talk with Tamara Saeb, head of communication for Médicos Sin Fronteras (Doctors Without Borders), about photographic coverage of the Ukraine conflict.

The war in Ukraine, the first of its magnitude on European soil since the Balkan conflict, has generated unprecedented media coverage. Thousands of professionals have traveled to this territory where they have faced many obstacles. How do you approach the challenge of informing against the excess of propaganda and fake news? Is it correct to cover the war by joining the military of one of the factions in conflict? What is the role of local photojournalists who often work as guides and interpreters for international media?

In this round table we reflect on all these issues and show the work of photojournalists.

This activity is part of the World Press Photo Barcelona exhibition and is organized by Médicos Sin Fronteras (“Doctors without borders”), the Photographic Social Vision Foundation and the Center for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB)

.

* Unfortunately, Oksana Parafeniuk will not finally be able to participate in the debate, due to the intensification of the bombings in Ukraine, which have severely affected the country’s energy and communications infrastructure.
